About the Family Support Council A Brief History From its inception in 1980, the Family Support Council has worked to support and build strong, nurturing families in Northwest Georgia. Ensuring that families have access to a seamless continuum of support as they do the important work of parenting is the goal of the Council and continues to drive program development and organizational changes. The Family Support Council was first established in 1980 with the formation of a local Parents Anonymous Group. That initial group provided confidential support for parents facing challenges in their parenting efforts. Renamed the Northwest Georgia Council on Child Abuse (NGCCA), by 1984, the agency had expanded its services and received financial support from the Pilot Club and the Kiwanis Club of Dalton. In 1986, NGCCA received its first United Way funding and became a charter member of the Georgia Council on Child Abuse. At that time, several programs were under the management of NGCCA: the Child Abuse Council, Parents Anonymous, and Kids on the Block, all aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect. The First Steps Program was added in 1990 and Healthy Families was established in 1991. In 1998, NGCCA joined with several other local family service programs to form an "umbrella agency" and adopted the name of the Family Support Council. The new agency streamlined administration and brought together similar family support programs under one roof to more effectively utilize community resources and provide improved service delivery. Joining existing programs at that time were the School Outreach Program, Child Care Resource and Referral, and Children First. Soon after, the "Success By Six" school readiness program joined the Council and recently, the Oak Haven Second Chance Home has been established, providing support for teen mothers and their babies who have no other safe place to live. October, 2001 saw the implementation of the agency's newest program: Dads Matter. Through all its changes and developments, the Family Support Council has remained true to its mission: to support children and families by ensuring that essential educational and support programs are accessible and available. Working collaboratively with many other community partners, the Council is committed to creating a better community and quality of life for all. |
